The Essence of Life – How Conservative Values Can Save Our Societies Autumn Seminar

26-28 September 2025

The Hungarian Scruton Hub is pleased to present its second time organized autumn seminar entitled “The Essence of Life – How Conservative Values Can Save Our Societies”, a 3-day intensive programme designed to introduce participants to the values and philosophical thinking of Sir Roger Scruton.

The programme is open for all Hungarian and foreigner under-, postgraduates, PhD students and young professionals who are interested in Sir Roger Scruton’s political and philosophical thoughts.

As our namesake, Sir Roger Scruton has lived on their farm, in a calm, natural environment for cca. 30 years, we also would like to highlight our natural treasures of our country. Therefore the autumn school will take place away from the Capital City, at Lake Balaton, at one of the most beautiful locations of Hungary.

Participants will attend lectures and panel discussions led by expert scholars, participate in dinners and talks with special guests, and enjoy the neighbourhood, Hungary’s beautiful countryside, having interesting discussions with each other. A visit to a notable countryside location will also be included in the programme.

The aim of the Autumn University is to offer responses to today’s challenges based on the conservative values upheld by Sir Roger Scruton, while also drawing attention to global phenomena that significantly affect the lives of young people today.

The five upcoming lectures will be the following:

  • The Screen Between Us- Fading Connections in the Digital Age
  • Marx Rebranded: The New Faces of Old Ideologies
  • In the Shadow of Crisis: Enduring War and Uncertainty
  • The Disappearing ‘We’: Identity Challenges in the Age of Globalism
  • Silenced Truths: Free Speech Under Fire

Students will be expected to actively participate in discussions and contribute to the seminar’s collaborative learning environment. During the programme we can provide three meals per day and accommodation for two nights. Applications are welcomed on the [email protected].We are waiting for a CV and a 1 page motivation letter from each applicant about their intentions and motivation on participating in our programme, how they found our work and how they got to know Sir Roger Scruton’s philosophy.
