God, Chance, the Multiverse, and Beyond: The Mystery of Cosmic Fine-Tuning – Dr. Daniel Came’s Lecture

The universe appears to be remarkably fine-tuned for the existence of life: even tiny changes to the fundamental constants of nature would have made life impossible. This lecture explores the mystery of cosmic fine-tuning and examines the leading competing explanations, including design by God, chance, the multiverse hypothesis, and the idea that the laws of nature could not have been otherwise. Drawing on philosophy, physics, and cosmology, it considers the strengths and weaknesses of each view and asks what, if anything, fine-tuning tells us about the fundamental nature of reality.
The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Daniel Came, Visiting Fellow at MCC and scholar at the University of Lincoln, whose research focuses on the philosophy of religion, nineteenth-century German philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics.
